What is DECT?

Back before almost everyone carried a cellphone in their pocket, many people had a cordless phone system in their household. This system, officially known as DECT, digitally enhanced cordless telephony, is still very popular in enterprise business settings for mobile workers.

DECT solutions are also chosen because of their enhanced security, coverage capabilities in difficult spaces, and reduced signal interference, among other reasons. And in fact, according to a recent study by Precision Reports, “the Global Enterprise DECT Phones market is anticipated to rise at a considerable rate between 2023 and 2031. In 2022, the market [grew] at a steady rate and with the rising adoption of strategies by key players, the market is expected to rise over the projected horizon.”

The Key to Transitioning Legacy Systems to Modern Communication

Many DECT Systems are supported by legacy cable which doesn’t support UC, messaging, or cloud management. Enterprises choose to keep legacy cabling because it can be expensive and time-consuming to re-cable, depending upon their environment and infrastructure.

Spectralink offers the IP-DECT Gateway removing the block from legacy systems to modern communication. This innovative solution provides a simple and secure connection from legacy systems to scalable Spectralink IP-DECT base stations and servers. With minimal upgrade time and costs, these legacy systems can now integrate with UCaaS, alarms and messaging platforms, and AMIE® solution management.

How does it work?

The Spectralink IP-DECT Gateway brides the gap from legacy digital DECT cabling and equipment and IP-DECT infrastructure. It converts digital DECT voice signals to IP-DECT and vice versa, joining the two together, and enabling IP-DECT functionality previously unavailable with these systems.

Think of it like when you play your favorite CD, you’re taking digital data (1s & 0s) on the CD and then your amplifier uses a digital to analog converter (DAC) to turn the audio into analogue to get pumped to your speakers. In this case, the IP-Gateway is doing the opposite: it’s turning digital DECT (think analog) into IP packets that computers and network routers understand and can work with, essentially serving as a DECT translator.
